ABOUT THE POSITION:<br />
The Library Assistant positions are utilized in the Literacy Program, Children&#8217;s Services, and Technical Services/Computer Lab. The Literacy Program provides free, confidential literacy instruction for any adult, eighteen (18) years of age and older, in the Downey area; to encourage family literacy; and to encourage lifelong learning. Children&#8217;s Services offers reference service and a wide variety of books, videos, cassette tapes, magazines, and pamphlets and programs for the children from preschool age through 8th grade. Technical Services offers online service to all the features found in the on-line catalog and gives people outside the opportunity to browse the wide selection of books, videos, audiobooks, reference materials, and use of the computer lab with a library card. The online Library Catalog also gives the opportunity to place a book on hold, guaranteeing the book&#8217;s availability for your next library visit. The current vacancy is in the Technical Services Area of the Library in the Computer Lab however, the list may be used for any other areas of the Library. Working Hours: The Library is currently open Monday through Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Incumbents must be able to work two (2) nights a week and rotating Saturdays. Sunday availability may be required. The current need is to work the night shift in the Computer Lab Monday through Thursday from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. and rotating Friday and Saturday mornings from 9:30 -1:00 p.m. Part-Time shifts may not exceed 999 hours on a fiscal year basis (July 1 thorough June 30.)</p>

<p>To  perform a wide variety of complex technical library support work; provide  responsible assistance in all areas of library technology, including, but not  limited to the library&#8217;s automated system, automated materials handling  (sorter), self-checks and radio-frequency identification (RFID), PC time  management and pay-for-print software, and an extensive installation of public  access computers on wired and wireless networks.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">DISTINGUISHING  CHARACTERISTICS:</span></strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></p>
<p>This is a paraprofessional class within library  services. Assignments are generally limited in scope and are set within  procedural frameworks established by higher level positions. As experience  accrues, the incumbent performs with increasing independence. Work requires  incumbents to exercise some judgment in selecting appropriate established  guidelines to follow. Significant deviations require prior approval.  Interpretation of general administrative or operational policies is sometimes  necessary.</p>

<p>Receives general supervision from supervisory library staff.</p>
<p>May exercise functional and technical supervision over assigned library  clerical, part-time or volunteer staff.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">EXAMPLES OF DUTIES</span></strong></p>
<p><em>The following duties represent the principal job duties; however, they are  not all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.</em></p>
<p>Provide direct support to Technology &amp; Support Services supervising  and coordinating staff in all areas of library technology. Answer technical and  informational questions related to the use of the library&#8217;s public access  computers, including Internet, e-mail, on-line databases, and wireless. Analyze,  troubleshoot, and resolve routine automated system, and hardware/software  problems reported by library staff and patrons. Report technology issues and  communicate effectively with vendor technical support staff by e-mail and phone.  Document and track all issues. Assist with the installation of computer  hardware, software, and peripheral equipment. Test software upgrades and  document results. Assist with developing and providing staff and patron  training. Write user documentation and step-by-step instructions. Use the  Internet to find documentation, utilize technical support website and/or review  knowledge base. Schedule routine and specialized computer generated reports.  Generate and compile statistics. Assist with maintaining Library Services  website and staff Intranet. Operate a digital camera, modify and upload images.  Apply general Library policies and procedures for patrons and staff; advise and  assist patrons in the use of Library services and tools. Attend meetings and  workshops to increase knowledge of current library practices. Perform related  duties as well.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS</span></strong><br />
<strong>Knowledge of:</strong></p>
<p>Computer technology, systems, networking  concepts, operations, and terminology. Personnel computer hardware and software  troubleshooting techniques, including issues related to printing. General  principles and practices of public library services and programs. Basic  mathematical principles. Basic filing procedures. English usage, grammar,  spelling, and punctuation. Modern office methods, practices, procedures, and  record keeping methods.</p>
<p><strong>Skill to:</strong></p>
<p>Operate various types  of machinery and computer/audio visual equipment, including personal computers,  laptops, printers, scanners, copiers, fax machines, conference phones,  microphones, LCD projectors, SmartBoard, DVD/VCR, digital cameras, self-check  machines, automated payment machines (APMs), automated materials handling  (sorter).</p>
<p>Type a minimum of 35 words per minute.</p>
<p>Operate a motor  vehicle may be required for some positions.</p>
<p><strong>Ability to:</strong></p>
<p>Understand and operate library systems.</p>
<p>Utilize a variety of  software applications such as Office 2007 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and  Publisher), HTML and photo editing.</p>

<p><strong>Experience:</strong></p>
<p>Minimum 1 year experience troubleshooting  computer hardware, software and system related issues and providing support to  end users in a work related or professional environment is required.</p>
<p>Technical experience in a library setting is highly desirable.</p>
<p>Library circulation or other library public service desk experience is  desirable.</p>
<p><strong>Training:</strong></p>
<p>Bachelor&#8217;s degree from an accredited  college or university with major course work in Library and Information Science,  Computer Science, Management Information Systems or a related field is required.</p>
<p><strong>License or Certificate:</strong></p>
<p>Select positions may require  possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license.</p>
